Guilford Siblings Honored for NSBSW Poster Achievements

Among the top winners of North Carolina’s 2016 National School Bus Safety Week (NSBSW) Poster Contest are two brothers and their sister, all of whom are enrolled this year at Jamestown Middles School in Guilford County. Angel Krastev finished 3rd in the state competition in the Grades 6-8 Division. His brother, Petar, finished 1st in the state in that division and his poster was sent to the nationals in Kansas City. Sister Anita Krasteva finished 1st in the state competition for grades 3-5 (she was in 5th grade at Union Hill Elementary last year) and also competed nationally, where she took first place in her Division!

The theme for the 2016 National School Bus Safety Week poster contest was “#Stop On Red!” - a message to the motoring public to STOP when they see the flashing red lights and stop sign, which means that students are boarding or exiting the bus. Over 3,000 times every school day a motorist in North Carolina will pass a stopped school bus.

Students from across the state entered the North Carolina competition and judging took place at the North Carolina Pupil Transportation Association Conference in Asheville, NC in July. First Place winners in two of the Divisions were siblings Petar Krastev and Sister Anita Krasteva and their brother Angel Krastev finished 3rd in his Division. All three students attend Jamestown Middle School this year.

As shown below, multiple boards featuring entries from across the country were displayed for judging at the National Association for Pupil Transportation Summit in Kansas City.

In congratulating the winners, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction’s Transportation Services Section Chief Derek Graham said, “Each of these students is to be commended for helping remind all motorists to be careful when encountering a stopped school bus.” Graham and Guilford County transportation director Jeff Harris made a special visit to Jamestown Middle School to offer congratulations. Each of the three siblings received a certificate featuring their artwork. State winners also received a jigsaw puzzle of their artwork and Anita receives a $250 check as a national winner.

Pictured below left to right: Harris, the students’ parents, Petar, Anita, Angel, their grandparents and Graham. “The kids were beaming all day!” school administers noted.

According to Graham, the entire family was extremely supportive and proud of their efforts. “I had a chance to chat with the grandparents, who I learned are from Bulgaria, before the presentation. Afterwards, I asked the kids – the entire family, really – where they had gotten their artistic talent. The whole family turned and pointed to Grandma!”

Congratulations to this very talented family!
